August: National Hair Loss Awareness Month
We are most confident when we feel good about ourselves and how we look, including our hair. If our hair is thinning and difficult to take care of, we become discouraged and less confident.
With all this talk about hair loss, I wanted to let you know that August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month. There are many causes for hair loss: genetics, aging, stress, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, diet, styling practices, and trauma.
Hair loss is a common problem that may spread through all age groups. The primary cause of hair loss in men and women is Androgenic alopecia. Androgenetic Alopecia is caused by our hormones and genes. The symptoms are different amongst women (a widening part, thinning hair on top of the scalp, hairline does not recede, and increased hair shedding) and men (receding hairline, thinning hair on the top or front of the head, bald area of the scalp, and hair shedding). Androgenic alopecia may start any time, even as early as puberty, but usually starts later in life.
